what do the paintings mean?
I am working with narrative painting. I am telling the story of a person being situated in a hotel environment to seek time alone away from the everyday. I am thinking about the idea of a person being between two identities, the person they put on in front of others and the person they are on the inside. I am questioning whether the person is the identity they are on the inside when they are with the company of themselves, or if they put on a front for themselves because they are uncertain of who they are.
Also want to show how it isn't as easily accepted to want to be alone in the modern day. We are overlapping with each other, recording our every move, to the point where people are lost without updates on people's lives, it feels uneasy disconnecting ourselves from the online world, as though if we do then we will be erased and we will withdraw from the daily, hourly, minutely interactions.
I have chosen a hotel environment because it is another uncertain boundary between what is supposed to be familiar to us and what not a familiar place. A hotel is set up to make people feel comfortable whilst staying there, we sometimes have familiar domestic objects and decor surrounding us to make us feel at home.
I am influenced by the idea of the hotel as an environment for a character from film and literature, for example, the shining tells the story of a character who goes mad due to the isolation, the hotel becomes a perfect setting for showing someone gradually getting more and more unstable. My aim is is to use a hotel environment to tell almost the opposite of this, how it can be good to be alone without the distractions of the everyday. The idea of a person being situated in a hotel environment provides enough for a series of paintings which could each tackle and show each of the ideas explained above.
I am looking at identities, social boundaries, environmental influence.
good parts of isolation: self reliance, exploring the self, a break from society's influence, the influence which may determine the persons outside identity.
What parts of the paintings represent this?
each painting will include an idea and all in the painting will represent different aspects.
